Deer are legal in my state. Huh! The Glock 23 is legal in my state. A .40 S&W shot with at least a 4 inch barrel is considered my deer medicine. Add in the ability to shoot a .40 carbine, and the joy increases with every extra pound you gain from the longer barrel.

Why do you say you can walk around deer with a .40 S&W around these areas? Because it's a powerful cycle. It may have been a few years since its first use in law enforcement, but that doesn't take away from the pumpkin's brilliance.

It's still a good guy deterrent and (according to deer rules in my state) a good deer too. Many law enforcement agencies used (or used) the .40 S&W, most notably the FBI, for a while before switching back to the 9mm. It fell out of favor, but the .40 S&W is still very effective. Let's take a quick look at the cartridge and then consider the gun.

Where did it come from? The .40 S&W began when the FBI asked Smith & Wesson (which adopted the 10mm cartridge) to introduce the 10mm cartridge. The 10mm full bore was very rare, so they wanted something that would be more accessible to shooters. S&W created the eponymous .40 by shortening the 10mm case and adding a small bore, and the FBI adopted it. For a more complete history of the .40, read our handgun comparison.

Very interesting, especially if you're a forty-year-old fan. To be honest, I have never owned a .40 pistol or a carbine. I have nothing against cartridges - I just shoot, shoot and reload 9mm and .45 ACP. I don't see the need to choose from .40 because I have the "book" around it on the caliber shelf. I have often thought about getting a .40 and a will in the future. If I do that, the reload will die, and the bullet pattern will be on the next list.

Gun Test: Glock Model 35

Carrying a weapon that provides 400 energy (or more) gives you confidence. This is true, especially if the gun is not large, easy to carry, and holds twenty or more. I think part of the downfall of the .40 is that the ballistic development of the 9mm cartridge has really taken off. In addition, there are now 9mm dim sum items that provide as much energy as Hostess Twinkies provide calories.

Since you can carry more 9mm ammo than .40 ammo in a given position, it makes a difference. Check out the market leader in compact 9mm pistols that compare to most others - Glock's 19 best-selling models. 23, from rounds 15 to 13.

Here we see the same difference when looking at the full size 9mm and 40mm Glocks and the Model 17 and 22. The Model 17 holds 17 rounds in the standard magazine compared to 15 rounds in the Model .40. 22.

It's not really earth-shattering, but it's important to some people. Some people carry five-shot J-frame guns – they don't seem to worry about capacity. If you know where to place the shot, it can compensate for the lower capacity of the cartridges.

However, going the other way reveals that the .40 S&W magazine in your pistol can hold one or more rounds than a .45 ACP of the same size. Using the same magazine comparison above, the full-size Glock model 22 in .40 holds two more rounds in a standard magazine than the full-size Glock model 21 in .45 ACP, 15 -13.

As a .45 fan, this is not exactly encouraging news, but (as the saying goes) it is what it is. To me it's amazing that the carry gun can hold up to 13 rounds of .45 ACP, not including an extra magazine and one round in the chamber. Capacity is very important when choosing a caliber. But the .40 is still a good choice. It's somewhere in the middle between 9mm and .45 ACP, and as Goldilocks discovered, the middle is probably the best place.

One thing you might not immediately think of about the 23 is the caliber compatibility. If you buy a .357 Sig barrel for your Model 23, you now have a gun in that caliber. Your .40 caliber magazine should work since the .357 Sig is based on a .40 case.

In the worst case, the meeting of followers can cause problems with food, so you need to take a 32 model magazine. Another caliber that easily converts to 9mm is the 23. Buy a conversion barrel for about a hundred bucks and a couple of Model 19 magazines and you're in the 9mm business, which becomes a Model 19 with a "23" on it. the slide. So you can have three guns for the price of buying one original gun and aftermarket parts.

If the ease of changing calibers isn't enough to make the 23 appealing, I don't know what will. But it is very interesting - one gun, three calibers.

The .40 will let you know you won't shoot the 22. Recoil is often described as harsh, especially in lighter pistols. If we remember that the .40 is a descendant of the 10mm, it is understandable. When you push a 180 grain bullet south of 1000 fps you get a kickback in terms of recoil.

You are talking about 400 ft/lbs of energy like some of the lower end .357 Magnum loads. I mentioned above how this round is legal in my state and I think I see why. The 10mm does everything better than the .40 when it comes to hunting, but when it comes to concealed carry and personal defense (read more about self defense insurance) I see where the .40 has an advantage. 10 mm.

The 10mm has a lot of glaring recoil (at least what I shot) which makes timely recovery difficult. It tends to make the sequel difficult to pull off in a fast and time-stopping fashion. I know some of you shoot 10mm regularly and are fine with recoil, but for most of us shooters, few are.

Gi Drop In Glock Conversion

Now we see the relationship between the 10mm and the .40 S&W in review. There are more than 10, but even a .40 in a light gun will get your attention.

The .40 S&W 23 may be in the minority. I only shot one load, a 180 Grain FMJ cut bullet with an accurate velocity of 990 fps from the SIG Sauer. This is a decent practice load to help you get used to how the .40 feels when you shoot it. Real bullets are even more powerful. And your shooting hand will learn the difference quickly.

If you own a .40, you must practice diligently with various self-defense-oriented loads. Also, don't shoot a full magazine and then go home. The .40 requires a little extra work in the practice department because it has more recoil than the 9mm. But if you put in the time, you've accomplished something that not all shooters can — tame the .40 enough to carry.

Don't take it now, I think .40 is high. It takes more time to master when you shoot it with a smaller pistol like the Glock 23. However, weapon control is worth the effort.

Consider A Glock .40 For Defense

That 23 looks about right considering how few shots it has. I've said it before - Glocks tend to be more accurate than average.

The 23 is slightly smaller than the 22 and has two minus the magazine capacity compared to the 22. So it can be a good choice for a concealed weapon. Its standard 13-round capacity makes it more than adequate for most situations, and its design strikes a tight balance between full-sized and subcompact pistols. You have a smaller gun than a full gun if you carry one, but you can always use a full size cap if you want - they just might stick out a little. Still, a simple but reliable and accurate .40 sub-pistol option.
