Aircraft Carriers In San Diego - Amy and I recently spent a weekend in San Diego and tried many places we'd never been before. From visiting Cabrillo National Monument, to hiking Cowles Mountain, to viewing the Greatest Generation statue in San Diego Harbor. The last attraction on our list, however, is a visit to the USS Midway at Broadway Pier in downtown San Diego. I have relatives who are in the military and even one in the navy so visiting this ship was a great experience and I would recommend it to anyone.

The boat is open most days from 10am to 5pm and adult tickets cost $18 (as of 2014). Once on board, your journey is your journey. When I walked to the inside of the boat I immediately noticed that it was not designed for someone like me. I'm 6'3" and had to duck my head going through the door. If you're much taller than me, you may not like navigating the inside of the ship as it seems to get smaller; it's however worth the effort, if not the comfort, to see all the unique sites.

We walked around the galley, where there were about 20 tables and a food-serving team, before continuing into the ship to the infirmary and dental room. An infirmary is not where you want to be on a ship. In a dental office, where the space is so close together and the drill sounds realistic, it would make me more uncomfortable to watch. I'm not a fan, but it was fun to watch.

From there we went into the engine room and saw the huge engine that propels a boat this size. A man there told us it was one of four cabins, which is incredible to think about. The whole grille you walk through is transparent and you can see part of the engine underneath, almost like an alien scene.

From there we went to prison. The prison consists of a number of small cells for high-level criminals, as well as a large room for those who need to stay overnight to adjust. If you are claustrophobic this is not the place you want to end up. You can even pose for a photo next to the fake cell if you want. They have wax figures everywhere that would make for fun photos.

After an hour on the inner deck, we went to the cockpit to inspect the plane and the admiral's and captain's quarters. This plane is worth the price of admission to me as they come from so many different eras and are worth a try. You can even sit on the plane for photos and you can hop into one of the many different types of helicopters. It was clear how much space they had to take off, which helped me understand how difficult it must have been. View some images below.

Next we went to the Admiral and Captain's Quarters, which I think is the place on the ship. They have their own private kitchen where a chef can cook for them, a living room, a full bathroom and even a sofa. They also have a full war room with cards and chairs around the table like in all the great war movies.

After this we went back to the Hanger Deck to check out the shop before we left. You could easily spend a whole day here as we walked for at least 2 hours but didn't see everything before we left. Since 2017, the annual "Battle of the Midway" nationally televised "Battle of the Midway" collegiate wrestling show is held in the museum's cockpit each November.

Membership has grown to over 25,000. In 2017, the "Battle of Midway" high-definition holographic cinema was added, and in 2019, the museum added a virtual reality flight simulator driving simulator to the museum's existing four aircraft.
