Airplane Crash West Virginia - Authorities have released the names of the two people who died in a fire in a plane crash in West Virginia.

State Police Commissioner. Shallon Oglesby released a statement Thursday identifying the victims as 70-year-old Clinton Terry Powers and 67-year-old Randy Lee Garcia. Both men are from Inwood, West Virginia.

The couple died Friday when their single-entry plane crashed in Summit Point, an unincorporated community near the state's border with Virginia.

Oglesby said the 1960 Mooney M20A plane was completely engulfed in flames and that the two men were dead when officials found the wreckage in a field. Powers was piloting the plane and Garcia was a passenger.

The crash was about 7 miles (11 km) southeast of Eastern West Virginia Regional Airport in Martinsburg, although the plane's origin and destination were not immediately released.

The FAA will investigate and the National Transportation Safety Board will determine the probable cause of the crash.

Jefferson County Sheriff Pete Dougherty told reporters the plane crashed Thursday afternoon in Summit Point, an unincorporated community near the Virginia line.

On Saturday Nov. 14, 1970, a plane carrying members of Marshall University's Thundering Herd football team and coaching staff crashed in West Virginia, killing all 75 people on board and leaving the university in shock and the community in mourning.

The Southern Airways DC-9 taxi was returning from a game the team played earlier in the day against East Carolina University in North Carolina. Marshall lost, 17-14.

According to history.com, the plane carried 37 football players, head coach Rick Tolley, team doctors, the university's athletic director and 25 football supporters from the Huntington, W., community.

Few people are aware of another football tragedy that occurred in the previous month - a plane crash involving Wichita State University football players.

On October 2, 1970, two airplanes, named "Gold" and "Black" in the colors of Wichita State University, transported players, cheerleaders, coaches and others to Utah for a football game against Utah State.

The university has a contract with Golden Eagle Aviation to provide a Douglas DC-6B to transport the team to the games. However, the airline did not have a DC-6 so he assumed to use one. But the DC-6 was damaged so the airline opted to use two Martin 4-0-4s.

The plane "Gold" was going beautifully, but the pilot was having trouble and could not pull the heavier plane out of the valley. The plane crashed on Mount Trelease, west of Denver in the Arapaho National Forest.

Of the 40 people on board, 29 died on the spot and two later. Of the 31 who died, 14 were Wichita State football players. Another 14 are university staff and football enthusiasts.

Pennsylvania Involved in the Marshall Disaster - No. 84 defenseman Pete Naputano is a junior from Altoona who is on the injured list but not on the plane.

Last year, the Tampa Bay Times published a story about another player, David Withers, who was not on the plane due to injury.

The story goes that Withers was dating Pete Naputano, who stayed behind while he nursed a biceps injury. Before hanging out on campus, the two traveled to Naputano's hometown of Altoona, Pa., with Withers making a detour to visit her grandparents who live in nearby Johnstown. .

Naputano was one of four players to lead the team onto the field in the spring of 1971 - along with Felix Jordan, Ed Carter and Nate Ruffin.

The 2006 film "We Are Marshall" depicted the aftermath of the crash. Matthew McConaughey stars as new head coach Jack Lengyel who is brought in to rebuild the team.
